There is not even an ounce of doubt that this film is a global classic.

La Règle du jeu (1939) directed by Jean Renoir

It is believed that great works of art are not so easily understood by laymen. This is exactly what had happened to one of Jean Renoir's most discussed masterpieces "Rules of the game" when it came out in 1939.It was severely criticized and was even branded as an anti French film. This film has ever since become one of the most influential French films of all times. From a sociological point of view "Rules of the game" is a highly useful film with a purpose as it exposes succinctly the prevalent hypocrisy in a society filled with both the aristocratic as well as the servant class. From the point of view of an artist this film is a classic too as it has found its inspiration from the works of three great writers of French literature : Alfred de Musset,Molière and Beaumarchais. The reason why "Rules of the game" has succeeded is simple. It is a film in which people can find their true reflections as Renoir had held a mirror in front of viewers asking them to have a look at their own true self.He cannot be termed wrong if some of the faces are crooked according to the Rules of the Game.
